The CCP has been holding quarterly meetings for the past 11 years on conservation and environmental topics and has provided a place for resource professionals and community members to learn and share ideas regarding the County’s most pressing environmental issues. The CCP led the effort to create the Comprehensive Conservation Plan for Chatham County that has been used in several other planning projects in the county, including Pittsboro, Siler City/Love’s Creek, and now the county’s Comprehensive Land Use Plan update.
The CCP is a volunteer-led organization and quarterly meetings are open to anyone who has an interest in Chatham County’s natural resources. The mission of the CCP is to develop and implement strategies for a community conservation vision that builds awareness, protection and stewardship of Chatham County’s natural resources.

    April 2017
The focus of the meeting was on nature-based economic development. We had four speakers explore this topic. Dr. Mitch Renkow, Professor, NCSU Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, gave a talk on Comparing Costs and Benefits of Different Land Uses (PPT below as a pdf) which resulted in a good discussion on how conservation lands can be economically valued. Neha M. Shah, Director of Travel & Tourism, Pittsboro- Siler City CVB, discussed the Economic impact of tourism in Chatham County (PPT below as a pdf). Joe Jacob, Haw River Canoe & Kayak Company, gave us a business prospective on the topic. Joe had a philosophical and down to earth understanding that we need to keep in mind, as a business person, you have more of a voice than as an environmental. Also there is more currency in life than money. We rounded out the meeting with a talk from Sarah Weller Pegna, Coordinator for Chatham Health Alliance, who told us about the new Exercise is medicine program in Chatham County and how it relates to need for more trails and passive parks.
